The state of cyber security in Indonesia is undergoing positive transformations. The biggest news came this year in March when the global behemoth, Google joined hands with Badan Siber dan Sandi Negara (BSSN), as well as non-profit companies and other social organisations to uplift the country’s security measures in the digital realm.
This mighty collaboration comes in the form of strategic initiatives and aims to develop a more robust digital landscape for Indonesia. The initiatives will entail cybersecurity training programs, capacity building sessions and AI-powered cybersecurity tools to support government entities, businesses and Indonesians at large, so they can confidently accelerate their digital adoption whilst shielding themselves against threats and cybercrimes.
In close partnership with the Center for Digital Society (CfDS) and the Artificial Intelligence Industry Research and Innovation Collaboration, the global behemoth, Google will spark dialogues between cybersecurity experts, policymakers and other stakeholders to encourage secure and responsible AI application in the country at the AI Policy and Skilling Lab. This move is said to aid the Indonesian policymakers with frameworks and the best roadmaps to leverage AI’s transformative potential. These initiatives are sure to strengthen cyber security in Indonesia as they will also include monthly think tank discussions to address existential issues and create informed policy recommendations for the safe inclusion of AI’s application in the archipelago.
Google Indonesia’s Director of Government Affairs and Public Policy, Putri Alam earlier shared his version of ‘Defender’s Dilemma’, “Attackers need only one successful intrusion while defenders are under immense pressure to deploy the best defenses at all times across an increasingly complex digital terrain. This is called the ‘Defender’s Dilemma,’ and we believe that advancements in AI can reverse this dynamic.”
He also stated his forecast concerning the impact of AI on cyber recovery, “The adoption of AI-powered cybersecurity tools—combined with the skills required to use these tools—has the potential to reduce cybercrime-related costs for Indonesian businesses and individuals by up to IDR 1,365 trillion by 2030.”
Furthermore, cyber security in Indonesia is anticipated to witness a stronger security culture as Google will also provide 1,000 cybersecurity scholarships to BSSN officials, thereby even enabling public officials with no prior background to contribute via cybersecurity roles.
The island country will also get to see a bigger collaboration between Google’s cybersecurity subsidiary, Mandiant and Badan Siber dan Sandi Negara’s cybersecurity teams in sharing the most advanced threat intelligence.
At a time when the world is moving to the cloud, Indonesia’s authority on cybersecurity supervision, BSSN will share close ties with Google Cloud to collectively work on capacity building including the creation of cutting-edge AI-powered cloud-based solutions to constantly identify and defend against cyber-attacks on Indonesia’s critical infrastructure.
Lastly, these two organisations will also be seen participating at the country’s most celebrated cyber security event, IndoSec on 24 – 25 September 2024 at the Jakarta Convention Center. While BSSN will leverage the platform to share its exemplary vision towards securing Indonesia’s digital realm, Google Cloud Security will put on a grand showcase of its most advanced cybersecurity solutions for the public & private sectors.
